Change a Life

Everyday we receive multiple requests to accept a new dog or cat – in many cases litters of puppies or kittens. When there is no room at the shelter and we can’t accept more animals due to space constraints you may literally be saving a life by fostering.
New rescues greatly benefit from being in a home environment with constant companionship and care.
Or you can foster an animal that has been living at the shelter which opens a space for a new rescue – also saving a life.
shelter life

Shelter life is stressful even for the most well adjusted dogs and cats.
The animals crave and greatly benefit from more constant human companionship.
They need an opportunity to blossom in a safe home environment.
“Our whole family benefited from Aurora’s presence – she brought us closer together as we worked together to care for her and celebrated each little milestone in her recovery. As a family that loves dogs, we deeply miss our own pet when we’re here for our winter stay. To us, a house doesn’t feel like a home without a dog. This experience provided a wonderful growth opportunity for my 11-year-old son. Through caring for Aurora, he had the chance to develop responsibility, find purpose in giving her a new life, and grow emotionally as he maturely handled saying goodbye when it was time for her to leave. Fostering through El Refugio gives us the perfect opportunity to support the local community during our time here while filling that dog-shaped hole in our hearts.
El Refugio’s support made all the difference. If you’re considering fostering, I can’t recommend them enough – you’ll change a dog’s life, and they’ll change yours too.”

Dogs & Cats
Your help prepares them for their forever home with exposure to the sights and sounds of everyday life.
This is so important in enabling them to quickly adjust when they are adopted.

Puppies & Kittens

Very young puppies and kittens who don’t have their mama require more care than is possible at our shelter that is staffed by volunteers for only 3 hours each morning and 2 hours each afternoon.
We are regularly asked to take in the wee ones but need more foster volunteers to help them.
What to Expect
We provide guidance, medical care and everything you will need to care for your foster in your home.
We arrange all appointments for medical care.
Whether you have chosen to foster kittens, puppies or an adult dog, our volunteer team will be available to support you all along the way.
All our animals are given vaccines, preventative medications, and spayed or neutered at the appropriate times.
Your Responsibilities
Ideally, you will be able to transport your foster pet to veterinary appointments and to adoption meet and greets.
If you do not have a vehicle you may still be able to foster depending on where you live.
You can be their advocate, sharing lots of photos and helping to get them adopted.

Open your home and your heart to loving a dog, puppies, or kittens in need of temporary care, and be a part of their beautiful transformation.
